So this week’s assignment was to play with the metering – to deliberately underexpose or overexpose photos.
For example – the story corner rug at school:
underexposed
proper exposure
- overexposed
So why would you want to underexpose or overexpose a photo? If what your taking a picture of is too white or too black, the camera will not meter correctly, so by underexposing or overexposing, you can correct this.
For example – taking a photo of a computer:
“proper” exposure
The camera makes the computer too gray looking, but by underexposing it:
underexposed
it comes out black (like it actually is).
And for another example – tracks in the snow, as the sun was getting lower in the sky:
“proper” exposure
overexposed
Actually, it’s still too dark at +1, so I should have tried it at +2. Then it probably would have looked more like this (corrected with software):
So at least I’m starting to understand it now anyway, with all this practice. Good thing we had two weeks between classes this time, as it took awhile to sink in!
