Why Calculus?

I recently posted this on Facebook:

Woo hoo! Just signed up to take Pre-calculus 30 online! #retirementfun

Reactions have been mixed, to say the least. 🙂 But what most people are wondering is WHY????

Back when I was in high school, Calculus was not offered. (And no, not because it hadn’t been invented yet!) If it would have been offered, I would have taken it. I loved math. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry – loved them all! And to toot my own horn just a little bit, I was really good at math.

So when I went to university straight out of high school, (a mistake for me – I lasted until February) I took a Calculus class. I have never been so lost in my life. The first test I got 63 on. I had never gotten below 90 on a math test in my life! But truthfully, I hadn’t really studied. But for the next test, I studied. And studied. I got 48. I did not have a flippin’ clue what I was doing!

Some of you know this about me already, but I DO NOT LIKE TO BE DEFEATED. If I set out to do something, I do it. Maybe not perfectly, or even well, but adequately enough to be able to say “I did it.”

My defeat at the hands of Calculus has always bugged me. So I’m doing something about it. Of course, it’s been a loooooong time since I did high school math, so I’m taking Pre-Calculus first.

I’ve also signed up for a hula hooping class – pretty much for the same reason. 🙂 It will be interesting to see which one is harder. My money’s on the hula hoop.

Wish me luck!
