I saw this Merlin (not a Sharp-shinned Hawk as I had previously thought) in Prince Albert yesterday. I’m not sure if it’s a Spring returnee or an overwinterer but have put the question into my Saskbird friends, so should have an answer soon. I’m also wondering what it’s eating – lots of white with black stripes on the tail. Anyone know what it is?Here’s a slightly out-of-focus shot that maybe suggests that dinner is a woodpecker of some sort:
Your bird is a Merlin NOT a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
Not sure about the prey item but will check further
Thanks Richard. I always seem to be getting my hawks mixed up.
Hi again
I suspect that the prey item may be a juvenile Evening Grosbeak. the tail markings are wrong for Snow Bunting. Downy or Hairy Woodpecker are also not a match.
Richard
Is that the same Richard Klauke that lived in Sundre, Alberta in the 1970s. He was an avid bird watcher and an old friend, and I have lost touch with him. Thanks.
